The Powers — also called the Authorities or Potentates — are the warrior-angels of the celestial order, the soldiers of heaven charged with defending the cosmos against the forces of chaos and restraining the powers of evil. They are the border-guards of creation, holding the line between the divine order and the dark.
The Soldiers of Heaven
Their name, from the Greek exousiai and Latin potestates, “authorities” or “powers,” marks them as the angels of authority over the spiritual realm. Tradition assigns to them the great task of keeping the demonic forces in check — of patrolling the boundaries of heaven and earth and preventing the fallen powers from overturning the order of the world. They are warriors and watchmen, the disciplined ranks who stand against the assault of the rebel angels.
Guardians of the Cosmic Order
The Powers are said to be the keepers of the celestial pathways, the angels who maintain order among the spirits and oversee the distribution of power throughout the cosmos. They guard against the corruption of the world’s order, contend with the forces of darkness that seek to lead souls astray, and bear the records of history and the courses of the nations. In some traditions they are the angels who escort souls and protect them from the snares of evil on their journey.
Authority Against the Dark
Ranked sixth among the nine choirs, the Powers complete the second triad — the orders that administer and defend the cosmos — standing just below the [virtues] and above the [principalities]. Theirs is a martial holiness: they embody the conviction that the divine order is not merely contemplated but actively defended, that heaven keeps armed watch against the chaos forever pressing at its borders. In the Powers, the angelic hierarchy gave form to vigilance itself — the disciplined celestial soldiery that holds evil at bay so that creation may endure.
