Information We Collect

When you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address and the IP address the sign-up came from, and ask you to confirm it by email before anything is sent. When you sign in with Google to comment, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google. When you use the contact form, we store your name, email address, message and the IP address it was sent from. Our web server keeps standard logs, including IP addresses and browser information, for security purposes.

How We Use Your Information

We use your email address to send the newsletter you subscribed to, and Google account information to attribute your comments. We never sell your personal information for money. When advertising is allowed, the advertising network and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to show and measure ads (see below). Under some US state privacy laws, such as California's, that can count as "selling" or "sharing" personal information for advertising. You can opt out of it at any time with Cookie preferences, and we treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as that opt-out.

Page Views

We count page views ourselves, without cookies or anything else stored on your device. For each view we record the page, the page you came from, the type of device, your country (looked up on our own server from your IP address; it is not sent to any other service), whether the visit came from a known bot, a shortened form of your IP address with the last part removed (for example 203.0.113.0 instead of 203.0.113.77), and an identifier that changes every day, so visits on different days cannot be linked to each other. Page-view records made before this change in October 2026 keep the full IP address, and an identifier that stays the same from day to day; records made since then store only the shortened address and the daily identifier.

To protect the encyclopedia from automated copying, we also record the IP address of any visitor who reads an unusually large number of entries in a short time.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

Strictly necessary. These cannot be switched off:

  • sign-in cookies for commenters and site staff;
  • drk_consent, a cookie that remembers your cookie choice for 12 months (the cookie itself can stay in your browser for up to 13 months, see Your Choices), with a copy in your browser's local storage (drakorix_consent);
  • drakorix_locale, your language, as a cookie for 1 year and a copy in local storage;
  • drakorix_theme, your light or dark theme, in local storage;
  • drx_loader_seen, in session storage, so the loading animation plays only once per visit;
  • drakorix_ab_dismissed, in local storage, only if you dismiss the ad-blocker notice.

Analytics. Google Analytics measures which pages are read and for how long. It sets the cookies _ga and _ga_*, which last up to 2 years. See Google's Privacy Policy. When analytics is allowed, we also check once per visit whether ads and trackers are being blocked, so we know how many readers our statistics miss. This keeps drakorix_cs in session storage and adds one to a daily count; it records no IP address and no identifier.

Advertising. Ads on Drakorix are served by Adsterra, a third-party advertising network. When advertising is allowed, Adsterra and the advertisers and partners it works with may set cookies or use similar technologies on your device to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure performance and prevent fraud. See Adsterra's Privacy Policy. To count our advertising, we record each ad shown or clicked on our pages with the page, the daily identifier described under Page Views and your country (looked up on our own server); no IP address is stored with it.

Your Choices

  • In the European Union, the European Economic Area (including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and whenever we cannot tell where you are, we ask first. Analytics and advertising stay off until you choose Accept, and Reject is as easy as Accept.
  • Everywhere else, analytics and advertising are on by default. You can turn either of them off at any time with Cookie preferences at the bottom of every page.
  • Your choice is kept for 12 months. After that we ask again, and nothing is switched on until you answer. The cookie that holds it can stay in your browser for up to 13 months, so that we can tell an expired choice from no choice at all; after 13 months without a visit nothing of it remains, and you are treated as a new visitor.
  • If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out of advertising: advertising stays off unless you switch it on yourself in Cookie preferences. Analytics stays on unless you turn it off there.
  • We work out your region from your IP address on our own server, on each visit. Nothing about this is stored or sent to anyone else.
  • You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some features may then not work.

Data Retention

Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe; every newsletter email has an unsubscribe link. Comments are kept as long as the chronicle they belong to. You may ask us to delete your data through the contact page.

Third-Party Services

We use Google sign-in for comments, Google Analytics for measurement and Adsterra for advertising. When you read a chronicle in another language, its text is machine-translated by Google; only the article text is sent, nothing about you. Each provider handles data under its own privacy policy.
