Naamah — “the Pleasant One” — is a demoness of Jewish lore and Kabbalah: a seductive spirit, one of the queens of the demons and a companion or sister of [lilith], who seduces men in their sleep and mothers demonic offspring, counted among the four great demon-queens of the Kabbalistic tradition. She is the dark seductress of the night.

The Pleasant One

Naamah (whose name means “pleasant” or “agreeable”) is a demoness of seduction and the night. The name appears in the Hebrew scriptures (a descendant of Cain, the sister of Tubal-Cain), but in the Kabbalistic and folkloric tradition Naamah became a powerful demoness — one of the queens of the demons, a seductive spirit who, like Lilith, comes to men in their sleep to seduce them and to bear demonic children from their seed. She is associated with beauty, seduction, and the dangerous allure of the night.

One of the Demon-Queens

In the Kabbalah, Naamah is counted among the four great queens of the demons — with [lilith], Agrat bat Mahlat, and Eisheth Zenunim — the four demonic consorts of [sammael] (or the four mothers of demons), the dark feminine powers of the “Other Side” (the Sitra Achra). As one of these queens, Naamah is a being of significant power in the demonic hierarchy, a mother of demons and a seductress who corrupts and ensnares. She is sometimes called the mother of the demon Asmodeus, or a consort of Samael.

The Seductress of the Night

Naamah’s domain is seduction, the corruption of men through desire, and the breeding of demons — the dangerous, alluring, dark feminine of the night, kin to Lilith in nature and purpose. Like Lilith, she preys upon men in their sleep and threatens the order of marriage and family. As one of the demon-queens of the Kabbalah, she holds a place in the dark mirror of the divine order, the demonic feminine that opposes the holy. In Naamah, Jewish lore and Kabbalah gave form to the seductive demoness of the night — the “Pleasant One,” one of the four queens of the demons, companion of Lilith and consort of Samael, the dark seductress who ensnares men and mothers demons, a power of the demonic Other Side.
