Kalachakra — “the Wheel of Time” — is a profound and complex meditational deity and tantric system of Tibetan Buddhism: a tantric buddha embodying the unity of time and the cosmos, whose teaching unites the cycles of the outer universe, the inner body, and the path of enlightenment, and whose famous initiation is among the most celebrated of all Buddhist ceremonies. He is time itself made into a path to awakening.
The Wheel of Time
Kalachakra (Tibetan Dukhor) means “the Wheel of Time,” and the deity and his tantra concern the cycles of time in all their dimensions — the outer cycles of the cosmos, the planets, and the calendar; the inner cycles of the breath, the energies, and the body; and the “other” or transcendent cycle of the meditative path that leads beyond time to enlightenment. The Kalachakra system unites these three — cosmos, body, and path — in an intricate correspondence, teaching that the cycles of the universe are mirrored within the human being, and that by working with the inner cycles one can transcend the outer. The Kalachakra tantra contains profound teachings on astronomy, astrology, medicine, and the calendar as well as on meditation.
The Deity and the Mandala
Kalachakra is depicted as a powerful, multi-armed, multi-faced deity (often four-faced and many-armed, blue-bodied) in union with his consort Vishvamata, surrounded by one of the most vast and complex of all mandalas — a great map of the cosmos and the enlightened being, containing hundreds of deities. His practice is among the most advanced and intricate of the highest tantras, working with the subtle body and its winds to transform the practitioner’s relationship to time and attain the timeless realization of enlightenment.
The Initiation and Shambhala
The Kalachakra is famous above all for its great public initiation, which the Dalai Lama and other masters have bestowed upon vast audiences — one of the most celebrated ceremonies in Tibetan Buddhism, held to plant the seeds of enlightenment and of peace in all who attend. The Kalachakra tradition is also bound to the legend of Shambhala, the hidden kingdom of enlightened rulers from which, prophecy holds, a future king will arise to defeat the forces of darkness and inaugurate a golden age — a legend that helped inspire the Western myth of Shangri-La.
