Chakrasamvara — “the Binding of the Wheels,” the Supreme Bliss — is one of the principal meditational deities (yidam) of the highest tantras of Tibetan Buddhism: a powerful tantric buddha embodying the union of bliss and emptiness, depicted in eternal embrace with his consort [vajrayogini]. He is among the most important deities of the mother-tantras and the unsurpassed yoga.
The Deity of Supreme Bliss
Chakrasamvara (Tibetan Khorlo Demchok, “Wheel of Supreme Bliss”) is a meditational deity of the highest yoga tantra, the embodiment of the indivisible union of great bliss and the wisdom of emptiness that is the goal of the tantric path. He is depicted as a blue, multi-armed deity, often with four faces, dancing in the posture of union with his consort Vajrayogini, the two locked in the embrace (yab-yum) that symbolizes the inseparable union of compassion/method (the male) and wisdom/emptiness (the female) — the integration from which enlightenment is born.
The Wheel and the Embrace
Chakrasamvara’s name and nature turn on the “wheel” (chakra) and the “binding” or “union” (samvara): he binds together, in supreme bliss, the energies and elements of the enlightened being, integrating the whole mandala of awakening. His practice, one of the most widespread of the highest tantras across all the Tibetan schools, works with the subtle energies of the body to transform the bliss of union into the realization of emptiness, attaining buddhahood through the transmutation of the deepest energies. His mandala is a vast and intricate map of the enlightened cosmos.
The Heart of the Mother-Tantras
Chakrasamvara is the central deity of an entire class of the highest teachings, and his practice (with Vajrayogini) is among the most important meditational systems in Tibetan Buddhism, transmitted through revered lineages.
