The Grinning Giant
The bungisngis is a giant — an enormous, powerful humanoid creature — with a single great eye in the middle of its forehead (a cyclops), and a perpetual, wide, toothy grin. Its name comes from the Tagalog ngisi, “to grin” or “to giggle,” for the bungisngis is always laughing and grinning, its booming laughter echoing through the forest. It is sometimes described with a large upper lip that it can fold over its face, and with great tusks or teeth. It dwells in the forests, the woods, and along the rivers, a creature of the wild.
The Strong but Simple Ogre
The bungisngis is immensely strong — able to lift and hurl great weights, to uproot trees, and to overpower most foes by sheer force. But it is also notoriously dim-witted and easily fooled, its limited intelligence making it a creature that can be outsmarted despite its strength. In the folk-tales, heroes and clever folk who encounter the bungisngis defeat it not by matching its strength but by tricking it — exploiting its foolishness and its distractibility (and its constant laughing) to escape or overcome it. This combination of fearsome power and comic stupidity makes the bungisngis a distinctive figure, both a menace and a figure of fun.
The Filipino Cyclops
