Eris

Eris was the goddess of strife and discord — the spirit of quarrels, rivalry, and chaos — and with a single golden apple she started the greatest war in Greek myth. Small, spiteful, and endlessly disruptive, she is proof that the Greeks understood how the smallest seed of discord can grow into catastrophe.

The Spirit of Quarrels

A daughter of Nyx (Night) and sister-companion of the war-god Ares, Eris personified everything that drives people apart: argument, jealousy, rivalry, and conflict. She delighted in sowing discord wherever she went, and where she walked, harmony unravelled. Hesiod noted there were really two sides to strife — a healthy competitive rivalry that spurs people to better work, and the destructive discord that breeds bloodshed. Eris embodied chiefly the latter.

The Apple of Discord

Her most fateful act began with a snub. When the gods were invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Eris alone was left off the guest list — precisely because she caused trouble. Furious, she came anyway, and tossed into the midst of the goddesses a single golden apple inscribed with two words: “To the fairest.” Instantly Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each claimed it, and their quarrel led to the Judgement of Paris — which led to the abduction of Helen — which led to the Trojan War, ten years of slaughter. The deadliest war in Greek myth began with one goddess's petty revenge and a single thrown apple.

The Seed of Catastrophe

Eris endures as the embodiment of the truth that great disasters often spring from small malices. An “apple of discord” still means a trivial thing that sparks a great and bitter conflict. She is the reminder that discord, once loosed, takes on a life of its own — and that the smallest act of spite can topple kingdoms.

One apple, two words, and ten years of war — never underestimate the goddess of discord.
