Jul 15, 20262 min readBy DrakoK

Marici — the goddess of the dawn, light, and the mirage — is a radiant Buddhist deity of the rising sun and the first light of morning: a goddess of illumination, protection, and invisibility, invoked by warriors and travelers, who rides before the sun in a chariot drawn by boars and cannot herself be seen, seized, or harmed. She is light personified, swift and unconquerable.

The Goddess of the Dawn

Marici (her name связ with the “ray of light,” the shimmering of the mirage, the light of dawn) is the goddess of the first light of morning, who goes before the sun as its herald and outrider. She is a deity of light and the heavenly bodies, associated with the dawn, the sun, and the stars, and she embodies the radiance that dispels darkness. As the light that precedes the sun, she is swift, ever-moving, and impossible to grasp.

The Unseen and Unconquerable

Marici’s most remarkable powers flow from her nature as light and mirage: she cannot be seen, caught, known, deceived, bound, or harmed by any enemy, for one cannot seize the light or the mirage. This made her a powerful protective deity, invoked for invisibility, escape, and safety from all dangers — a goddess to whom warriors prayed before battle for protection and victory, and travelers for safe passage. In Japan, as Marishi-ten, she became an important protective deity of the samurai and the martial arts, invoked for invincibility and for the power to be unseen by one’s foes.

The Riser of Boars

Marici is depicted in radiant and dynamic forms — sometimes with multiple faces and many arms, fierce or serene, riding upon a boar or in a chariot drawn by seven boars (or seven horses), racing before the sun. The boar, which roots in the earth and is hard to catch, suits her swift and elusive nature. She holds emblems of light and of her protective and martial power. In Marici, Buddhism gave form to the dawn-light and the mirage — the radiant goddess who rides before the sun, who cannot be seen or seized or harmed, the giver of light, invisibility, and protection, the unconquerable goddess of the first light of morning.
