The myth of Imhotep: a real historical genius of ancient Egypt deified after his death, the brilliant architect, physician and sage of the Third Dynasty

Imhotep

Imhotep was a real historical genius of ancient Egypt who was deified after his death — the brilliant architect, physician, and sage of the Third Dynasty who designed the first pyramid, and who was later worshipped as a god of medicine, wisdom and healing. One of the very few non-royal Egyptians to become a full god, he is the rare case of a real man elevated to divinity for his genius.

The Genius of the Third Dynasty

Imhotep (Egyptian Imhotep, “he who comes in peace”) was a real historical person who lived around 2600 BC, in the Third Dynasty, serving as the chief minister (vizier), high priest, architect and physician to the pharaoh Djoser. He was a polymath of extraordinary genius — an architect, engineer, doctor, priest, scribe and sage — and his achievements were so great that, uniquely for a commoner, he was remembered, honoured, and eventually worshipped as a god for over two thousand years after his death.

The Builder of the First Pyramid

Imhotep's greatest and most enduring achievement was as an architect: he designed and built the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara — the first pyramid, and the first monumental structure in the world built entirely of cut stone. This revolutionary building, a series of stacked stone terraces rising as a great stepped pyramid, was an architectural and engineering breakthrough that transformed Egyptian building and inaugurated the great age of pyramid-building. As the designer of this first stone monument, Imhotep was remembered as the founder of Egyptian architecture in stone, one of the greatest builders of all time, and his name was honoured by the architects and builders who followed him.

The God of Medicine and Wisdom

Imhotep was also revered as a great physician and healer, and as a sage and scribe of profound wisdom. After his death, his reputation grew and grew, until — in an extraordinary honour almost never granted to a non-royal person — he was fully deified and worshipped as a god of medicine, healing and wisdom. Temples were dedicated to him, the sick came to his sanctuaries to be healed (sleeping there in hope of healing dreams and cures), and he was invoked by physicians and scribes as their divine patron. He was regarded as a son of the creator-god Ptah, and the Greeks identified him with their own god of medicine, Asclepius. For over two millennia, the deified Imhotep was worshipped throughout Egypt as a benevolent god of healing and learning.

The Man Who Became a God

Imhotep endures as one of the most remarkable figures of ancient Egypt — the real historical genius, architect of the first pyramid, physician and sage, who was deified after death and worshipped for two thousand years as a god of medicine and wisdom. He embodies the Egyptian reverence for genius, wisdom and great achievement, and the rare and extraordinary honour of a mortal man elevated to full divinity for his brilliance; and he stands as the man who became a god — the polymath whose genius built the first pyramid and healed the sick, remembered and worshipped across the ages as the divine patron of medicine, architecture and wisdom.

The real-life genius who designed the first pyramid and was worshipped, for two thousand years after his death, as a god of medicine and wisdom — the rare mortal man elevated to full divinity for his brilliance.
