Kataragama — the God of Kataragama, Kataragama Deviyo — is among the most powerful and widely worshipped of the guardian deities of Sri Lanka, a fierce and potent god identified with the war-god Skanda (Murugan, Kartikeya), the six-faced, twelve-armed son of Shiva. One of the four great guardian gods of the island, lord of the sacred southern shrine-city that bears his name, Kataragama is revered by Buddhists, Hindus, and others alike as a granter of boons and a god of immense, immediate power.
The God of the Sacred City
Kataragama takes his name from the holy town of Kataragama in the deep south of Sri Lanka, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in the island — a place revered across religious boundaries, where Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Vedda people all worship. There the god is enshrined, and to his shrine come pilgrims in their multitudes, especially at the great annual festival, performing acts of devotion and penance — fire-walking, body-piercing, and the carrying of the kavadi — to win his favour. He is a god of the here-and-now, famed for the swiftness and power with which he answers the prayers of the faithful.
Skanda the War-God
Kataragama is identified with Skanda (Murugan, Kartikeya), the great war-god of the Hindu tradition, the son of Shiva, commander of the divine armies, the spear-bearing slayer of the demon Taraka. In his iconography he may appear with six faces and twelve arms, riding the peacock, bearing the divine spear (vel). This fierce, martial, victorious nature makes Kataragama a god of power and protection, invoked against enemies and dangers, a deity whose strength is felt and feared. In Sri Lanka this Hindu war-god was absorbed into the Buddhist guardian-pantheon as one of its mightiest members.
Guardian of the Island and the Faith
As one of the Sathara Varan Deviyo, the Four Guardian Gods who protect Sri Lanka and its Buddhism, Kataragama holds a place of great prominence, his cult among the most vital and popular on the island. Within the Buddhist framework he is understood as a powerful deity who, like the other guardian gods, supports and protects the Dharma and the faithful, his fierce power turned to the defence of the island and the granting of the prayers of devotees.
