Vibhishana — Vibhishana Deviyo — is a guardian deity of Sri Lankan Buddhism, venerated as one of the great protective gods of the island, and famed in the wider Indian tradition as the righteous brother of the demon-king Ravana: the virtuous rakshasa who forsook his wicked brother, sided with Rama, and was made king of Lanka. In Sri Lanka he is honoured as a guardian deity, especially of the Kelaniya region, the just rakshasa-king elevated to the rank of a protecting god.
The Righteous Brother of Ravana
In the great epic the Rāmāyaṇa, Vibhishana is the youngest brother of Ravana, the ten-headed demon-king of Lanka who abducted Sita, the wife of Rama. Unlike his brother, Vibhishana was righteous and devout, a being of rakshasa birth but of virtuous heart. When Ravana refused all counsel to return Sita and avoid the doom he was bringing upon his people, Vibhishana alone dared to advise peace and justice — and, rejected and insulted by his brother, he left Lanka and went over to the side of Rama. After Ravana’s defeat and death, Rama crowned the righteous Vibhishana as the new king of Lanka, the just ruler who would govern the island wisely.
Guardian Deity of Lanka
In Sri Lankan tradition, Vibhishana — as the righteous king of Lanka of ancient legend — became venerated as a guardian deity of the island, in some reckonings one of the Four Guardian Gods, his chief shrine at Kelaniya, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites near Colombo (itself associated with a visit of the Buddha). As a deity he is a protector, invoked for justice, protection, and welfare, the virtuous rakshasa-king who, having chosen righteousness over kinship with evil, watches over the island he was given to rule. His worship marks the Sinhala Buddhist tradition of elevating righteous figures of legend to the rank of protective gods.
The Choice of Righteousness
Vibhishana’s great meaning lies in his choice: born among the demons, brother to the greatest of villains, he nonetheless chose virtue, justice, and the right — abandoning his own brother and people’s doomed cause rather than share in wickedness. This made him, in the moral imagination, the very type of righteousness placed above loyalty to evil, the good man (or good rakshasa) who will not be ruled by kinship with the wicked. As a guardian god of Lanka, he carries this character of justice and right, the deity who protects the moral order of the island.
Legacy
Vibhishana endures as a guardian deity of Sri Lanka — the righteous brother of Ravana, the just rakshasa made king of Lanka, elevated to the rank of a protective god venerated especially at Kelaniya. In him the island honoured the triumph of righteousness over evil and the legend of the good king who chose virtue over kinship with the wicked. As the deity of the just rakshasa-king, Vibhishana remains a distinctive and revered figure in the guardian-pantheon of Sri Lankan Buddhism.
